first time I kissed a girl, we were wearing matching sorority garb
and both had dates the following night," says Lipstick, a.k.a.
Gina Daggett. "As soon as we were able to peel ourselves apart,
we called the boys and cancelled." Instantly, Lipstick knew
that a woman's touch was her salvation and the only thing she'd
ever really wanted. A third generation high-femme and former debutante, Lipstick was learning about hot rollers before she was out of diapers. At the same time, while Lipstick was still a tyke (she hadn't yet replaced the "t" with a "d"), her mom was also teaching her the secret sorority handshake. Little did Mom know she'd actually redefine
the word sisterhood.
A
form of catharsis, her passion for the written word surfaced on
the pages of her journal as she penned her way out of the closet.
At the same time, she got sucked into the creative storm of Brenda
Ueland. Like her femme seductress years before, Ueland's feisty
book—If You Want to Write—blew her world apart. Since then,
she's been navigating a learning journey that includes a Creative
Writing program, a flock of freelance assignments and other glimmers
of inspiration that typically unearth themselves during mile four
of her afternoon runs.
In college, Lipstick served as Vice President of Standards (VPS) in her sorority, Kappa Kappa Gamma. As VPS, the chairman of the Standards Committee, she was the enforcer of sorority standards, policies and ideals. Lipstick was responsible for keeping over 120 sorority girls in line (no easy feat!) and doling out disciplinary action when necessary. As an advice columnist now, Lipstick can sometimes hear sorority rush songs in her mind as she’s responding to a dyke who’s lost her way, channelling that VPS when offering a sympathetic ear or cracking her whip.
When
Lipstick's not standing at the MAC counter looking for a new
shade of lipstick, she's working on a sexy novel that recently won a POWER UP grant (it will soon be shopped around by her literary agent). If she's not pounding
the keys of her computer, she's pounding the pavement with her running
shoes or digging in her garden.
